About the case

UPDATE – CAMILLA IS RELEASED! More info regarding her relase and the fund-raising to support Camillas legal defence will come soon.

We need your financial support to make sure Camilla Broe gets a fair trial in the United States – in order for her to get back home to her little daughter as soon as possible. Since December 2007 Camilla has spent a long time imprisoned and gone through several court procedures in Denmark to try to avoid her extradiction. She was extradicted to the United States on September 4th – even though the Danish court didn´t have time to consider the altered indictment document. She is now seperated from her 10-year daughter Isabella which is in foster care in Denmark. Camilla and her family and friends have no more financial means to support her U.S. defense. Therefore we are seeking donations and support from the public.

Your financial support will be used for Camilla’s U.S. defense . So far, with the help from the Danish media, friends and family, donations are getting close to $32,000. This is really fantastic, but we are in need of more help. Her attorney is asking for $60.000. As the first part payment of the legal expenses are already spent, we are now pleading for help to raise the remaining $28.100. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Please help us to spread the word and feel free to link to www.camillabroe.com/en.

5th of September: Camilla Broe arrived in Miami yesterday, assisted by two US Marshals and followed by several Danish news reporters.  Camilla’s sister Betina and her good friend Kamille pleaded on Danish national television one last time before Camilla was extradited.  A press conference was held at the Copenhagen Airport after Camilla’s departure with almost all of the Danish media present along with others interested in supporting the protection of human and civil rights. Camilla’s attorney addressed the media; indicating that Camilla has been unjustly held and extradited by the Danish courts and legal system without due process.  He further stated that “not since World War II” has the Danish Courts made such a poor judgment in its decision.

The Danish Court and the Ministry of Justice appeared to have an agenda, which resulted in Camilla’s extradition, whether or not it was governed by Danish laws.  As late as Thursday, Sept. 3, a jury was assembled in the United States to review the case and confirm Denmark’s authority to extradite Camilla. One should think that such concerns would have been clarified and confirmed long before this late in the process. It certainly indicates that the Danish courts and Ministry of Justice held Camilla in custody on charges with out being 100% certain that they legally could do so.

Friends of Camilla believe the Danish Court and Ministry of Justice held Camilla in custody on alleged charges and illegally extradited her without following proper legal protocol or production of any supporting physical evidence.

We further believe that Denmark granted Camilla’s extradition solely on the basis of building a stronger relationship with the United States. Although the relationship between the two is important to most of us, we still can’t stand silent on something we find so unjust. Post 9/11; Denmark has tried to be recognized as one of Europe’s closest allies to the United States. Denmark’s former Prime Minister, Anders Fogh, earlier this year became the Head of NATO, and since 9/11 Denmark has supported US efforts against terrorism with their military.

We support the fight against terrorism, but we are a group that believes that Camilla and our rights as citizens have been mistreated.

Camilla is blessed with a very large support system in Denmark. From politicians, the media and to a wealth of concerned citizens, who all are outraged and concerned of how Camilla could be extradited despite the many questions of legitimacy of this case.

Thank you again in advance for your support for Camilla and her cause.

Sincerely,

Family and Friends of Camilla

Camilla Broe is the first Danish citizen ever to be extradicted to the U.S- because of a new Anti-Terror-bill that was agreed upon between Denmark and the United States in 2002. But Camilla is not charged for any terror activities. She is charged for involvement in drug operations led by her former boyfriend, which took place over 12 years ago

Camilla was extradicted on friday 4th of September.

Background
In 2001, Camilla was living in Florida as a single mother with her daughter when the US authorities approached her, telling her that they were investigating her former boyfriend; a boyfriend she had for a period from 1995 to 1997; for being involved in trafficking of drugs involving “ecstasy” and money laundering, from Amsterdam to Miami, FL. Camilla and her attorney voluntarily went to the U.S. Attorney to give them what information she had. She was never told she was a suspect; her attorney repeatedly contacted the U.S. Attorney to follow up; and they never told her she had to stay in the U.S. She moved back to Denmark, and has lived there since with her daughter, who is now 10-years old.

While at work on December 5, 2007, just shortly before the Christmas holidays, Camilla was arrested by Interpol. The request for arrest was granted by the Danish Ministry of Justice and based on Danish laws adopted in 2002. Her Danish attorney Michael J. Eriksen appealed the decision while she was detained in a Danish prison for almost 9 months before her trial finally went to court. The Danish court ruled in favour of Camilla and she was released to be reunited with her then 9-year old daughter. However, the Danish prosecutor appealed the case and soon it was overturned. This time she lost and was taken back into custody. Her attorney once again responded and appealed the case to the highest Danish court. On August 6, 2009, the committee that reviews and decides which cases go in front of the highest court ruled that her case did not qualify. Therefore, Camilla’s case did not earn merit to be heard!

Since Denmark never before has exercised this law; if her case doesn’t earn the merit to be heard by the highest court, then what does?

We believe this has become strictly a political decision. Denmark is a small country consisting of 5.5 million people. In the past 10-years Denmark has worked hard on being affiliated with and supporting the US. In 2002, after 9/11, Denmark and other Nations signed an agreement that terrorist suspects may be extradited to a given country of interest. Denmark adopted and added language involving other crimes to this new law, which would allow Danish citizens to be extradited on mere suspicion of charges.

Camilla will make history by being the first Danish citizen to ever face extradition to the U.S. on charges that have been backed by little or no evidence. She is charged with a crime that took place 12 years ago. People in Denmark are outraged as they realize that this could happen to anyone.

Someone could go on vacation to the United States, be accused of a crime without substantial evidence, end up in an American prison system, stand trial in an American court with no financial support from their country of citizenship and if unable to afford proper legal representation, be represented by a public defender appointed by the court.

We believe that when a crime is committed a penalty should be expected. We definitely think that there should be consequences when a law is broken. However, to be sent to another country and to be held in custody for alleged charges unsupported by evidence, while the prosecutor and defence build their case seems outrageous. Due to these frustrating and dire circumstances, we need your immediate support; not only morally, but financially as well.
